Joe Marks opens the meeting requesting updates.


  • Karen Russell from Healing Touch updated the group regarding the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP). Participants will learn about 5 key recovery concepts, making your own Wellness Recovery Action Plan, and how to use and share your plan.  This training targets individuals living with mental health, substance use and/or intellectual/developmental disability issues and their families/loved ones who want to create positive change in the way they feel, or increase their enjoyment in life.  There is no cost for this training.  To register, call Rebekah McCloy at (828) 759-2160 extension 3357 or email mccloy@vayahealth.com.  The training will take place on January 30th and January 31st at 408 Spaulding Rd, Marion, NC 28752.  (9:00am – 4:00pm).


  • County Commissioner Johnnie Carswell updated the group on the Pharma Lawsuit. Burke County could be seeing a settlement earlier than expected.  A settlement could be made within 6 months.


  • Sheriff Whisenant updated the group regarding Naloxone. Thanks to a collaboration of Partners Behavioral Health, Burke Recovery and Project Lazarus, 104 officers are now equipped with Naloxone.






            The Power of Prevention

6 Initiatives in 6 Months.

The Burke Recovery Prevention Team, Sarah Gregory, Matikia Robinson and Bryan Austin presented on their prevention efforts over the past 6 months.  Updates included the latest statistics, limiting access, and raising awareness.  The intervention efforts included Program Reach, Take back and Drop Box events, Naloxone, Lock Your Meds/Follow the Box, School Presentations, and the Youth.


    The Burke Youth Health Coalition      

Three members of the Burke Youth Health Coalition (BYHC) took the stage and presented on their efforts as well.  Gillian Abee-Freeze, Elizabeth Barus and Cadence Davis from BYHC told the group about their personal reasons for becoming Change Agents for the county.  The BYHC efforts include Mental Health Awareness Posters, Merchant Assessments, Merchants changing their merchandising methods, Park Assessments, a presentation to Valdese Town Council, and Vocal Lens.  Upcoming events include Vocal Lens 2018, Valentine’s Day Fundraiser, the Tobacco Campaign and a Recruitment Event.
