BSAN Meeting Minutes, April 28th, 2017

44 people were present at the Collett Street Recreation Center in Morganton, NC on Friday, April, 28th 2017 for this 7:30am breakfast meeting.

BSAN member Derrick Reynolds offered the invocation.

Joseph Marks, Executive Director at Burke Recovery, welcomed the group and introduced Carol Ervin, Behavioral Health and Medical Detox Director, Kate Hawkins, LCSW, Behavioral Health Unit Supervisor, and Brian Byerly, MSW, LCSWA, QMHP, Clinical Social Worker, from Carolinas HealthCare System-Blue Ridge for a presentation regarding mental health awareness and issues.

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month

Carol Ervin opened the presentation by reminding us that May is National Mental Health Awareness Month.  Ms. Ervin expressed the need to raise awareness by spreading the word and addressing mental health issues in our community.  She also spoke about the unnecessary stigma, bullying, and humiliation those with mental health issues face, which further complicates their lives and willingness to seek help.  Ms. Ervin also updated the group regarding Mental Health First Aid, the Mental Health Awareness website, and the Mental Health Awareness event calendar.

“Mental Health is the Wellbeing of All People”

Kate Hawkins also spoke about mental health issues along with the progress that has been made in recent years to alleviate stigma associated with mental illness.  Ms. Hawkins and Mr. Byerly compared past attitudes with current attitudes and how some people were once ridiculed for attempting to bring mental health into a hospital.  They also mentioned that a new emphasis on the relationships of poverty, substance use disorders, and mental health issues along with how utilizing a more holistic approach is creating more progress.  They expressed that using a holistic approach s eems to be helping professionals take a broader outlook than relying solely on their expertise preventing during interventions.  Ms. Hawkins and Mr. Byerly also spoke about the opioid epidemic and how it is destroying lives with injury, job loss, broken families and death.  Mr. Byerly also presented the latest statistics regarding substance use and mental health issues.  Ms. Hawkins and Mr. Byerly concluded the presentation by explaining how mental health disorders affect the same areas of the brain as substance use disorders and how these disorders are associated with trauma, depression, communication issues, and adolescent issues.                       

Joseph Marks, Executive Director at Burke Recovery, returned and spoke about stigma, recidivism, and the language used regarding substance use and mental health issues.  Mr. Marks also reminded the group about the upcoming 2nd Annual Recovery Rally being held on September 16th.

Joseph Marks also requested updates from the group prior to adjournment.

HIV Testing

Kimberly Rhoads, MA, LCAS, System Liaison for Partners Behavioral Health Management, updated the group regarding substance use prevention block grant dollars and HIV testing.  ALFA is now contracted with partners to provide on-site HIV testing for people in treatment for substance use disorders in Burke and Catawba under substance use prevention block grant dollars.

JAYLA

Joy Carswell updated the group regarding JAYLA, an Outreach Women’s Ministry Program in Burke County.  The program helps women to find jobs, homes, clothing etc.  If you would like to learn more about JAYLA, you can reach Ms. Carswell at (828) 838-8754.

 

Burke Integrated Health – New Location    

Teagan Brown, Development Director of A Caring Alternative, updated the group regarding the new location for Burke Integrated Health.  The new location will be on North Square and is currently being remodeled.  No date has been announced but the location change could possibly take place in July 2017.

 

Luncheon for the Homeless

Josh Singleton, Integrated Navigator Health Liaison at Burke Integrated Health, updated the group regarding a luncheon for the homeless held by Caring Solutions that will be taking place on June 1st.

 

May BSAN Meeting

Next month’s BSAN meeting will be held at 7:30am on Friday, May 19th, 2017 at the Collett Street Recreation Center in Morganton.
