BSAN Meeting Minutes, March 31st, 2017
42 people were present at the Collett Street Recreation Center in Morganton, NC on Friday, March, 31st 2017 for this 7:30am breakfast meeting.
BSAN member Charles Mosely offered the invocation.
Joseph Marks, Executive Director at Burke Recovery, welcomed the group and requested updates from the group.
Spring Into Good Health
Lisa Moore from Burke County Health Department updated the group on the Spring Into Good Health event. This is a FREE event providing education concerning cancer, how cancer is the second leading cause of death in Burke County and how we can prevent it. Phifer Wellness Center will be demonstrating activities you can do at home and healthy snacks will be available. Free Screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and lung health will also be available. The event will be held from 7:30am to 11:30am on April 8th, 2017 at the Connelly Springs Town Hall, 1030 US Hwy 70, Connelly Springs, NC 28612 (Rain or Shine). Mental Health Awareness Month Is Coming
Lisa Moore also mentioned that May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental Health Awareness Month was started is the USA in 1949 reaching millions of people through the media, local events, and screenings.
Wendy Cato, from the Burke Recovery Board of Directors, updated us on the new approved Public Transportation Route that connects the towns of Valdese, Rutherford College and Morganton. The fees and starting date have not been determined. The transportation service will be provided by Greenway Public Transportation.
Dorraine Hernandez, from North Carolina Division of Social Services, updated us on the current foster care issues in Burke County. Currently, we have twice as many children in need compared to last year. Dorraine stated that we are in desperate need of Foster Parents and Social Workers at this time. Dorraine also stated that most of the families affiliated with these children have substance use issues. The hiring of an on staff Mental Health Counselor and Substance Abuse Counselor has been recently been approved and interviews will begin shortly.
New Psychologist On Board
Dr. Joseph Mazzola, MD, D.O., CPE, FAAFP, FACOFP, Chief Medical Officer made us aware that Blue Ridge Healthcare has a new Psychologist on board and will be practicing In House Patient Counseling.
Burke County’s Fight Against An Epidemic
Dr. Edward T. Plyler, MD, FAAFP, CMD, CCD, Chief Medical Officer and Bryan Austin, Prevention Specialist from Burke Recovery, presented updates and results regarding Burke County’s Opioid Epidemic. Bryan Austin began by speaking about the latest statistics regarding overdoses and drug poisonings in Burke County. Dr. Plyler spoke about the Medical Community Efforts towards better opioid management. The topics Dr. Plyler focused on were proper prescribing, NC Medical Board Opioid Education requirements for practitioners, the Burke County Medical Society supporting BSAN, outpatient management clinics attempts on non-narcotic approaches to pain, in-patient Non-opioid Options, hospitalists and residents limiting post-acute care quantity of narcotics, the CHS Blue Ridge Narcotic and Sedative Prescribing Policy for the Emergency Department and their goals to reduce opioid-related overdoses, and guidelines for ED providers to help prevent substance abuse. Bryan Austin returned to update the members regarding community education efforts that have recently taken place, efforts and results with raising awareness, plans to continue raising awareness, continuing to educate the youth, the Lock Your Meds Campaign results, medication drop boxes, and survey results on the youth perception of harm of the non-medical use of prescription drugs. Bryan Austin also updated the members regarding the upcoming Girls Empowerment Summit and Burke County’s Youth Health Coalition.
