Alternative & Complementary Therapies: Panel + Discussion – August 26

Alternative & Complementary Therapies for Prevention & Treatment: Panel + Discussion
Burke Substance Abuse Network (BSAN) gathers
for our free monthly breakfast meeting
this Friday, August 26, 2016 at 7:30am
Alternative treatments for addiction are no longer, actually, alternative in the “outside of the mainstream” sense; providers, facilities, communities, are already using non-traditional approaches with people who are not responding to traditional approaches, or in ways that complement and enhance other forms of therapy. But what about alternative methods as prevention? Or methods currently in research phases? Or methods that aren’t reimbursable? Or those that are hard to find? How can we be a part of developing a new paradigm to wellness?
Panelists are from a variety of practices: holistic nutrition, mindfulness/meditation, yoga, electrotherapy stimulation, new uses for DBT — all presenters work with evidence-based therapies or those being currently researched.
Please RSVP your plans to attend, including any guests, to

About the Panel:

Integrating Mental Health Treatments into Substance Abuse Treatment

45% of people seeking substance use treatment have been diagnosed with a co-occurring mental health disorder. Why? > Neurodevelopmental wiring, Trauma, Environmental influences, Alcohol and drugs change the brain and can create mental health disorders.

Less than 1/3 of patients with co-occurring disorders get treatment for both.

Examples of evidence-based treatment we are using for substance abuse treatment: MATRIX Model, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Examples of evidence- based and evidence supported treatments for co-occurring mental health and substance use treatment: Assertive Community Treatment (ACT)Mind- Body Bridging Substance Abuse Program (MBBSAP)Double Trouble in Recovery (DTP)Mindfulness Based Substance Abuse Treatment (MBSAT)Addiction and Trauma Recovery Integration Model (ATRIUM), Trauma Addiction Mental Health and Recovery (TAMAR), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness therapy originally designed to treat Borderline Personality Disorder, one of the most difficult disorders to treat. The disorder is characterized by extreme mood swings, angry rages, chaotic relationships, and self-destructive and suicidal behaviors. DBT has also been used successfully with other patients with impulsive or self destructive behavior such as eating disorders and substance abuse.

DBT includes a weekly (or more often skills group to teach and coach coping skills and weekly individual therapy to reinforce practice and address obstacles.  The skills are organized into four basic modules which are covered in a specific order and can take 6-12 months to complete.

Holistic Nutrition and Addiction Recovery

Holistic Nutrition as it relates to addiction recovery includes such concepts as Biochemical Individuality, Digestion, Detoxification, Neurotransmitters, Diet, and Lifestyle.

The foundation of good health comes from eating real foods based on a person’s biochemical individuality. Whole foods, stress reduction, and lifestyle management she feels are the foundations of optimal health.

Tracey Whitstone Fox’s journey into holistic health began as a patient of famed functional medicine pioneer, Dr. Mark Hyman and his nutritionist, Kathie Swift.  From that life altering encounter, Tracey experienced optimal health and balance that sent her on a journey to learn as much as she could about the effect food and lifestyle have on the body.  Kathie Swift mentored Tracey into the Holistic Nutrition program at Hawthorn University,  where she graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Tracey is the Director of Nutrition at Integra Wellness Center.  She also sees patients at Integra Rehabilitation Physicians, and The Brain Restoration Clinic where she assists a team of doctors in providing nutritional counseling and lifestyle strategies to their patients.  She also teaches classes on holistic health all over the country.   Tracey is co-founder of Holistic Reboot, a very popular 5 week class series.  She also runs a virtual practice where geography is not a limitation to  the people that she sees.

She has appeared on many local Charlotte television and radio shows, as well as print media. Tracey enjoys exercise in all forms, yoga, meditation, cooking, inventing recipes, reading, hiking, and exploring the farmer’s market.
